Community Involvement                         - School Outreach

The DuBois Institute seeks to impact childhood obesity in the Wiregrass through its direct support of the USDA Farm to School Program,    Farm to school provides all kids access to nutritious, high quality, local food so they are ready to learn and grow.  Farm to school activities enhance classroom education through hands-on learning related to food, health, agriculture and nutrition.  As a strong community partner we can assist with sustainability issues associated with growing and maintaining the number of school gardens in elementary and middle schools.  Everyone can agree that teachers have a lot on their plates.  Adding food and garden education to the mix can sometimes be overwhelming.  Our program connects school and community gardens with school meals through seasonal harvest events and educational activites.  To prepare for fall harvest, teachers and students are invited to participate in an intensive workshop.  A half day of talking, tasting, and harvesting under the sunny skies on our urban farm.  Teachers and students leave the workshop educated, inspired and ready to engaged about our local food system.  When messages about food and nutrition are reinforced by teachers in the classroom and garden, children are more likely to try and enjoy healthier items offered in the cafeteria.

Community Involvement                         - Church Outreach

The DuBois Institute seek to impact the growth and cultivation of new gardens by working with local church groups.  We are available to meet with church groups interested in launching a garden missions outreach to provide information on how to get started and sustain their garden vision!
